Chinese online retailer Alibaba (Taobao) has opened three new Hema supermarkets (盒马鲜生), where customers can shop online or in store.

These outlets are part of Alibaba’s new retail plan, which uses technology and data to merge online and offline shopping, offering consumers ‘a more efficient and more flexible shopping experience’.

The stores, themselves, look like normal neighborhood supermarkets, with a selection of packaged foods, produce, beverages and other goods. Every item has a scannable bar code, which yields price and product information, including origin and any back story on the item if there is one.

Tsukiji Fish Market is a very famous fish market in Tokyo which attacked not only citizens but also tourist to enjoy a meal here. But now this is no longer a dream in Beijing.

 

Customers who prefer the in-instore experience can visit the supermarket to hand-select their fresh food, such as seafood, and can choose to have it cooked for carry-out, delivered to their nearby home or office, or they can eat it on the spot the store’s dining area.

The seafood section is the first one to welcome you when you first entered. The best thing is that every tiny part of this section is super clean and you barely can smell the stinky smell of seafood!

 

With various kinds of the seafood here are alive and are imported from 50 countries with the best quality.

Such as King Crab from Russia, the weight of each is around 2 kilo but the price is only 1/3 of the luxury hotel or the salmon from Norway deliver daily.

What if the seafood is no longer fresh? There always some staffs are checking around and pick out stale one.

And if you prefer to take some home, just tell the staff and they will put it in the bag for you.

 

When you see this blue sign, it means that they can cook it for you right away here, it will extra charge you around 15 – 30/ half a kilo. Chefs here are from the 5-star hotels, so no need to worry about how it tastes! If you can’t wait for it to be cooked, you can also choose those which are already done. In the future, it will have teppanyaki section too.

What if you suddenly got hungry when you are doing grocery shopping? Just grab the stuff you like to have and scan the barcode at any cashier, step 2? Start to eat. You can easily find cashiers everywhere here. 1/3 of the area is the dining area. There’s also other shops in the supermarket, so you can get some breads and drinks while you shop.

How much does Chinese love hot pot? They even set up tables for mini hot pot and the dishes are served according to the province its located. Right now it’s only served in Shilibao branch in Beijing.

 

The aisles are super wide; it was designed for three trolleys in a line and the top of the shelves can be reached easily.

What if you are not satisfied with the things you bought? They accept return anytime with no condition. It doesn’t have to be 100% brand new or unopened.

Since 2015, Alibaba has opened 13 Hema markets. Apart from the 10 in Shanghai, now there are two in Beijing and one in Ningbo.

The Hema experience starts with a download of the mobile app. That links right up to a customer’s Taobao or Alipay account. Customers who don’t have accounts yet can easily sign up. And then the shopping begins, wherever the customer is.
