A walk through Liulichang Antique Street is a fascinating experience. There are two sides of the street – The East and the West. The streets are connected by a bridge. The shops on Liulichang Antique Street are indoor shops with a few outside vendor stalls selling authentic antiques. The sprawling streets on both sides offer a feast for the eyes.

Liulichang Street was a place for scholars, painters and calligraphers in ancient Beijing to get creative. Among Beijing’s Antique Markets it has always been a well-known haunt for authentic antiques with the locals but is gaining popularity rapidly among visitors to Beijing.

Panjiayuan Antiques Market 潘家园旧货市场

 

The Panjiayuan Antiques Market is famous not just in China but all over the world. Sellers from all over China come to the flea market to showcase Chinese arts and crafts. It is renowned for selling a wide variety of second-hand goods and curios.

The vast area is an outdoor selection of stalls with a few indoor stores arranged in area zones specialising in various collectibles and antiques. Panjiayuan is a bargain paradise for lovers of second-hand goods, trinkets, mini Buddha statues, wooden puppets and what not.

As this antique market covers a vast area, it has been divided into four areas to make your experience shopping here less overwhelming.

Merchandise sold in Area 1: Emerald, Jade, Pearls, Agate, scripts, paintings, ancient Bamboo sculptures and painted arts and crafts

Nearby Panjiayuan Antiques Market lies Beijing Antique City. It is a large building dedicated to shops of authentic antiques. The building has 4 floors: 1F, 2F, 3F, 4F, B1 and B2 (basement divided in two parts).

This is a sophisticated complex of shops based on each floor. It is expensive compared to Panjiayuan Antiques Market and Baoguosi Culture Market because it boasts of an exclusive collection of antiques and art work.

The glass display in the shops makes one forget that these are shops rather than an impressive museum. Beijing’s Antique City is perfect for a wander around and to get an insight on China’s unique art and crafts culture. Baoguosi Culture Market 报国寺文化市场

 

The Baoguosi Culture Market is enveloped in a serenity that draws you in. It is situated in what used to be an ancient temple from Liao Dynasty, right next to the Guanganmen metro station.

Among Beijing’s Antique Markets, Baoguosi Culture Market is an intimate affair compared to the hustle and bustle of Panjiayuan and Liulichang antique market.

Baoguosi market is recommended for serious collectors interested in vintage Chinese coins, bank notes, stamps and books. The antique stalls are located inside two of temple halls while the others are in surrounding parts. On weekends the Baoguosi market comes alive with vendors being allowed to sell in the open space.
