Living in China without WeChat Pay or Alipay is like living without cash or credit card. The survey shows only 10% of users prefer to pay via credit card or cash over WeChat Pay or Alipay. How can we open a WeChat Pay account?

The things you will need:

 ✔ WeChat account

✔Passport

✔ A Chinese bank card (Available for online bank)

✔Phone that linked to your bank card

Go to your WeChat and click on Me?Wallet?Cards. This will take you to a section to add a Chinese bank card.

If you don’t see Wallet in your WeChat, it is because you download the international version of WeChat. So at this moment, you will need to ask your friend who has WeChat Pay to send you 1 RMB red envelope to you.

When you tap on the money transfer or red envelope, it will pop out the link to activate the WeChat wallet.

Now you can add a credit or debit card to link with your WeChat Wallet.

You will need a Chinese bank card.

Notice:  make sure you use the exact name you use that matches with the name linked to your bank card. The name field is also case sensitive. Make sure you type your name same as you provide to the bank. Here you need to be aware that in China, people write their family name first then is the first name which is totally opposite to western. You need to check the blue paper that the bank staff gave you while you open your bank account.

First, you need to insert your bank card number. If you don’t want to type it one by one, you can tap on the camera icon to scan the card number and it will automatically insert it for you.

Then it will pop to card information page.

ID Type, you need to tap it and choose passport and then insert the ID number you provide to the bank.

At last, you provide your phone number that you registered with the bank and the system will send you an SMS verification code to you after you tapped on next step.

After you verify your phone number by inserting the SMS code, you need to set up a 6 digits number of the password. To be double secure, this can be different from your bank card pin. If you have an iPhone, the Touch ID can be used when you use WeChat pay, compared to Android users they will need to insert this 6-digit-WeChat pay password.

For one bank card, it can be linked to many WeChat pay accounts. If you share with someone else, make sure the card information is same as the one that provides to the bank. But the WeChat pay password can be different.

Now you have successfully linked your bank card with WeChat! But here’s the last thing you need to set up.

At the wallet page, on the left, there’s a section called “Money”. That’s the QR Code for pay to the vendors or receive money without being friends. After setting up your WeChat Pay, tap on “Money”, the system will ask you to activate this function by inserting the pin you just set.

Otherwise, the system will tell you that this card has already linked with one account.
