The Western Academy of Beijing was founded in 1994, at a time when there was a need for additional school spaces to accommodate the growing expatriate community.
More than any other international school, Western Academy of Beijing is committed to maximizing learning for each individual student.
The school is known for its responsible integration of the latest technology into the learning experience, including broadcast systems, coding classes, 3-D printing technologies, design equipment, and much more. A ‘1-1 student to laptop’ policy ensures that students in Middle and High School can make the most of the advanced learning tools. Younger students also have access to laptops and tablets, as well.
On campus, WAB has six buildings – one for each of the school sections (ECC, ES, MS, HS) — as well as the HUB Sports & Technology Center, an air-supported sports dome, a full-length swimming pool, certified sports fields, several theaters, gyms, libraries, and a beautiful pond which is not only beautiful but serves as a unique learning resource for students.
Off campus lays ‘Mao Liang’. Opened in 2009, this center based out of the city allows students to study environmentally aware power and agricultural systems. Solar PV, solar hot water and ecological grey water research facilities are all available at Mao Liang.
WAB’s Early Childhood Center (ECC) is for students aged 3 to 5. The curriculum is based on Reggio Emilia’s researches, whose philosophy values the child as strong, capable and resilient; rich with wonder and knowledge.
Students in the ECC through Grade 5 follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP), a curriculum framework for international primary schools. Grades 6-10 follow the IB Middle Years Programme, and the IB Diploma Programme is offered for students in Grades 11 and 12. However
1,400 Students and teachers from over 80 countries come together among the six buildings on WAB’s campus, which is conveniently located in the Chaoyang District, just north of the trendy 798 Art District. The school celebrates quality education in a multilingual and multinational environment where learning strives to not only lead to academic success but the development of the whole child so that they may use their learning to make a positive impact on their local and global communities.
The campus and curriculum create an international environment with Chinese characteristics
